Advances For Wind Power Systems

Advances For Wind Power Systems

In the quest for clean green energy, advances for wind power systems has resulted in it being perhaps the fasted growing energy sector today. When the mind recollects the Dutch windmills of former years and thinks forward to modern turbines spinning in a gentle breeze, some idea of the forward movement in research and implementation can be gotten.Modern technology has mastered the art of harnessing electricity from the environment. When all that is needed is a steady breeze, wind power presents a very attractive option for producing electricity.Meteorologists will confirm breeze generates over landmass and is accelerated with large plains, mountainous terrain and a large coastline. Some countries have ideal terrain to harness this efficiently.Canada is one such country. The challenge is for engineers to design turbines that capture that breeze to produce affordable electricity.A massive research effort is underway to develop better and bigger turbines.Turbines that can operate safely and effectively in both low and high wind conditions. Both on land and at sea, and small household installations though to commercial farms. The major obstacle to building turbine farms is public perception that they detract from the view and and reduce property values.Because turbines are on tall pedestals to capture the best breeze, they become visible from long distances.Finding an ideal location that does not detract from the local vista has become a challenge. This has turned engineering attention to sea based farms. They can be positioned far enough off land to minimize the environmental impact and capitalize on strong sea breezes. However, this poses a new set of challenges.Finding materials that resist salt air and function with minimal maintenance over extended periods in strong air conditions is important.Transfer of electricity from water based turbines to land based substations has long been mastered.Science has turned its attention on the performance of modern carbon fiber and lightweight ferrous-cement technologies to find these answers.Developments in aircraft engine design are also of value in creating more efficient turbines.Research and development in large scale projects has a habit of filtering down to smaller installations that can revolutionize the design and efficiency of even the humble generator. Many designs are cylindrical with rotors that reminiscent of early jet engines and curves that act like an airfoil speeding up air crossing one surface and adding more energy to the system.Increasing efficiency is also enabling small units to operate effectively near ground level, mounted unobtrusively on the tops of buildings or the crests of hills. While these units do not trap the best breeze, superb balancing of components allow even low air currents to create electricity. For someone considering wind generation, they should seek out available grants and assistance.A competent professional in this area can help answer questions on investment and performance.Advances for wind power systems has reached the point where these systems are a viable generating solution for both large commercial and households needs.Power from the air has come of age for both consumers and electricity supply companies alike.

Using Lego in Higher Grades of Learning

Using Lego in Higher Grades of Learning

Lego is one of those amazing toys that kids play with eagerly but never realise they are learning some mighty life skills while they are doing it.Basically Lego is a construction toy comprised of a variety of small building blocks that can go together in infinite ways to create innumerable different creations.Lego has evolved over the decades since its first creation but the basic premise remains the same.By building models form instructions and of their own creations kids learn about concepts like spatial design, sequencing, patterns, hand eye co-ordination and much, much more.In addition to their basic blocks Lego have also introduced a number of elements to assist with higher learning in upper primary and secondary schools.Elements such as the NXT robotic equipment, power functions and solar panels can really lift the learning curve of a child's lego experience either by introducing them to the child's play environment or having them as part of a structured educational curriculum. The robotic kit, Lego NXT 2.0 is fully programmable using a computer.Constructing a model then plugging it into a PC can allow kids to program movement and responses into the robot.By integrating the computer and construction model kids learn about the concepts of robotics and the system can understand quite complex levels of programming. The Lego power functions kit is basically a motor than can integrate with regular and technic Lego pieces and make the model move.Unlike the NXT system you can't program the model to perform set moves but it is amazing what can be achieved with Lego and a motor.Kids really love watching their creations move and the Power functions is a relatively low coast and easy way of allowing this to happen.Lastly Lego has a solar kit that can power Lego creations using the power of the sun.By attaching the panel to the top of a car for example and then using the motor, kids can power their cars by the sun's rays.Lego is truly a learning experience for the 21st century.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mercedes-Benz Unimog U 400, September 9, 2011

This review is from: LEGO Technic Set #8110 Unimog U400 (Toy)
My compliments go to the people at Lego who designed the instructions. They are very clear and don't add too many parts in a single step (which is a huge benefit when building something this complex!).
I only have one small complaint: the dark grey transmission gears with the little teeth on the axle hole were not rendered in the instructions (Book 1, Page 20, Step 4); the instructions show a gear with no little teeth around the axle hole - I spent 20 minutes looking for a gear that didn't exist! LOL I flipped forward to see the other gears and they all were rendered without the little teeth, so I figured Lego's instruction making program couldn't render them that small.
Now the good stuff. This model is built WELL! There is bracing, there is cross bracing, and there is bracing for the bracing! Once I'm finished assembling this model, I'm very confident that it will not come apart easily. There are a lot of neat parts included, like the specialized axles. There are... Read more

This set retails for 199.99 from LEGO and was released this year. It can be purchased from multiple sources at retail price, not the inflated price here. The set itself is excellent.

**Update December 2011: Lego has delisted this set. Expect prices from third-party retailers to soar.**

I am the nut-job parent that you'll see in some of the other train reviews. I grew up with Lego and returned to it when I had kids. Obviously I am terribly partial to Lego, but I'll give you the best review I can so that you can make the decision that is right for your kids. I do not receive free sets or compensation for my Lego reviews.

It is really hard for me to give a Lego train four stars instead of five, but please hear me out before you ding me. If you have a Harry Potter fan in the house, then this train is wonderful. It has a great set of characters and the train is sufficiently styled like the actual GWR 4900 Class 5972 Olton Hall that you can imagine it steaming towards Hogwarts with Harry, Ron and Draco aboard. Where it falls short is in the use of standard train wheels for the engine, something that Lego did not have to do because they began... Read more

I wouldn't use this for playing, since the magnets that connect the train cars are entirely too weak (Pulling it across my table was a problem), but it's still a great decoration piece, and it looks really neat!

It took me a dedicated six hours (A couple of hours a night for three nights) to get it done, and the final size was about two feet for the train and a little Ford Angila big enough for two figures and a suitcase. I put Ginny and Draco in my Angila and Luna Lovegood is the train engineer.

I think it's the best Lego Harry Potter product on the market, until Diagon Alley comes out.

5.0 out of 5 stars All around great toy for any kid (or adult), October 17, 2010
    = Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: LEGO Harry Potter Hogwart's Express (4841) (Toy)
We just got this toy for my 7 year old's birthday and I was a little skeptical because the price was a little steep - I have to say it was totally worth it. This train is awesome. From the easy way that it moves when he drives it to all of the little details that they put into making this a wonderful piece of Harry Potter memorabilia.

I love all of the little details like the wand boxes, the chocolate frog on the trolley and Luna Lovegood's glasses - they are great! My child has had hours of fun with this toy already and there are many more hours of fun to come.

To anyone deciding to buy this I would definitely recommend it. It is a wonderful piece of Lego that is only going to gain in value over time - especially considering what the Hogwarts Express that came out a while ago costs now.

I also love the car. The blue Ford Anglia is awesome! With all of the little pieces that go into building it, it truly looks like the original in the movie... Read more
